Queer representation in Digital games

Games radar

This was another good article that really elaborated on the previous subject detailing some of the few examples both positive and negative of queer representation in video games – of which there has only been 176 that they could personally find.

Of that 176, only 83 had a queer character be playable, and of those, only 8 had a character that was queer by design and not as a result of player choice.

so only 8 characters were written into the game as not being heterosexual.

it also talked about the type of representation mainly present in these games with a lot of lgbtq+ characters being portrayed as more of a mean spirited joke than positive representation.

with even one example given where a character was written in as trans-gendered so “players wouldn’t feel uncomfortable beating up a women”  which is terrible as it both justifies violence against trans women and portrays male to female trans folk as being “not real women”

It also talked about some more positive examples of queer representation namely “the last of us” by developers naughty dog studios. although criticised the game for killing of its queer characters quite soon into the game saying this played into the “bury your gays” trope were queer characters are frequently killed of in media early into their stories.

this article helped me by showing me some of the best and worst examples of representation that the gaming market is currently and has historically given.
