Why I picked this subject.
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, a long term video games enthusiast and as a budding games developer, one thing has been apparent to me for a very long time is the absolute lack of adequate or positive representation of queer identities within the medium of digital gaming. That’s why I decided to research and create my essay on this issue. I had the hopes that I could both better understand this issue through my research, and create a clearer vision on how I want to tackle this when I create my own games. Through my research I have both been shocked at just how awful some portrayals of queer characters have been and pleasantly surprised by other more positive examples.
